The global floral industry continues to blossom and as a result the top flower producing countries around the globe are expected to see a more bright and promising future in both the trading market as well as production of flowers.

Flowers are thought to be sentimental items that are used to symbolize love, compliments and feelings like peace. Keeping that in mind you will see a sharp rise in demand for these flowers during events like Valentine’s Day. Christmas, New Year, Mother’s Day etc.

As a result of this high demand you will see more countries are taking part in the floral business and the global floral industry is getting bigger after every year.

When it comes to largest flower producing countries the top 5 flower producing industries are following

  • Netherlands
  • America
  • Brazil
  • Sweden
  • Denmark

Due to the high demands of flowers and their suitability in every occasion more countries are now expanding their floral business and they are gearing up to take part in this competition and Asian countries are no exception

Previously when you think of flower producing countries what countries come to your mind? It is quite obvious that your mind would think of yellow and red tulips of Holland, Wildflowers of the South African countries but now you should include Asian countries in your list because the floral industry in Asia is growing bigger and better.

Why Asian Countries?

Many European and American countries are doing very good for the economy of their country by cultivating many beautiful flowers and supplying them to other countries in other continents. By doing this they are expanding their flower businesses. From the past few years we have seen an exponential growth in flower demand throughout the globe which helped many countries to benefit their economies.

Therefore by looking at all of this from the past few years Asian countries are also gearing up to become part of this industry and China is on the top of the list.

China is the country which is producing many seasonal and non-seasonal flowers and exporting them to other regions as well. Therefore the Chinese floral industry is now in billions.

Along with that India is also on top of the Asian countries. The biggest flower market of Asia the Mullik Ghat is in Kalkutta India which is a hub of floral market.

Why Asian Floral Market is a less used term?

Asian countries are worth billions of dollars when it comes to floral industry and according to a current estimate Chine alone is valued more than $11 billion. Yet when you search for Asian floral industry on search engines like Google you will find no groups or industry organizations which represent the flower industry in Asia.

Although this lack of representation of flower industry in Asia predominantly in China is about to change but effective measures must be taken by the Asian countries to uplift their flower culture industry.

Asia has a great potential in the world flower industry but this potential is yet to be recognized. The Asian floral culture has taken years to be coined and before people used the term like Chinese flower industry, Korean or Japanese floral industry but not Asia as a whole.

The main reason behind this less used term is countries in Asia were not paying much heed on their floral industry and flowers were cultivated only on small scale but now Asian countries are trying to expand this industry which has a great capability to benefit the economy of the nations.

Driven by domestic demands

When it comes to flower industry Asian countries focus their supply on their own markets which is quite unlikely to the rest of the world who mainly focus on exporting their flower supplies to all countries. This is also a main reason that most of the countries don’t even know that Asian countries also have variety of flowers available.

Flowers and Asian culture

Flowers are a very integral and crucial part of the Asian culture from very ancient years and they are used in various cultural as well as spiritual practices.

These flowers are a sign of royalty in Asian culture because they were always presented to the king of the time.

Recently flowers also became part of the everyday life which is linked with prosperity and a healthy lifestyle. Governments in these countries are also a playing a huge role by buying flowers for urban development.

This perception has effectively enhanced the domestic demand for flowers specifically in Asian countries like Japan where the domestic floral industry is massive.

According to an estimate it has almost $9 billion worth in the country and is playing a huge role in providing employment to the citizens.

The main thing about Asian countries like India, Japan and China is that their export of flowers is not very huge and most of the flowers that are produced here are consumed by its own people.

And because of this reason export of the flowers is limited to only 10-15% but this is now changing ; countries like Malaysia and Ukraine are now working to reach the international floral markets as well.

Growing the floral industry in Asia

Other than Japan, China and India floral industry also includes countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. Just like Japan, Indonesia is also growing its industry to satisfy its domestic demand for foliage and cut flowers.

But when it comes to export of the floral items it is a great challenge for countries within Asia. Indonesia has seen drastic fluctuation in its exports due to changing policies. In 2012-201, it exported more than $29 million but in later years it has reduced to $5 millions.

Although flower industry in Asian countries is getting bigger and better and they are now in billions but these countries have to go a long way to flourish in this industry like European countries. And for that purpose governments must introduce friendly policies and must play their role.
