Different Types of Roses

Roses are one of the most romantic flowers all over the world. They symbolize romance and love. But, do you know that there are a wide variety of roses, all of which have different meanings. For instance, purple roses represent love at first sight and attraction and orange roses depict passion. There are thousands of rose hybrids and more than 150 types of roses.

You can find them in almost all colors and several shapes. Experts categorize roses into three major parts, namely Modern Garden roses, Old Garden roses, and Wild roses. Out of these, the first two categories are further divided as per their lineage and hybrid. In this blog post, you will learn about the main groups and classes of roses from our flower wholesale expert.

Modern Garden Roses

These types of roses are bred after 1876. A lot of people know about this category of roses. They are mostly classified as per their flowering and growth attributes. Modern Garden roses flower throughout the year as compared to Old Garden roses that flower only once a year. Furthermore, the former roses have a longer shelf life and bigger flower size. However, they are free from diseases, not very hardy, and do not have a fragrance.

Climbing Roses

Climbing roses have upright and firm canes that can be modified with support. They do not grow like vines. These canes are mostly attached to trestles, fences, and walls. The canes can even be more than 15 feet. These types of roses bloom more when they are grown in a horizontal manner instead of in a vertical one. Climbing roses are repeat bloomers and have big flowers.

English/David Austin Roses

David Austin or English roses are quite popular among retail merchants and customers. More than 50 years ago, David Austin began breeding roses so as to create a new rose class with the best features of both old and Modern Garden roses.

Due to this, he was able to create hundreds of rose varieties, which had a strong fragrance and rosette shape of Old Garden roses and extensive color variety and repeat flowering of Modern Garden roses. However, these roses cannot survive adverse growing conditions and can easily get diseases as compared to other types.

Floribunda Roses

These roses are a blend of Polyantha and Hybrid Tea roses. They are characterized by their big flowers and the typical Hybrid Tea form. You can find them in several colors, such as white, purple, pink, yellow, and orange. These roses are hardy, disease-resistant, and easy to tend. They have firm and thick bushes and are generally planted in public places and parks.

Grandiflora Roses

Grandiflora roses were produced in the last century so as to create a rose type for blends of Floribunda and Hybrid Tea roses. Thus, they have the characteristics of both these rose types. They have lovely blooms and a repeat growth cycle.

The flowers are big and flashy and the stems are long with one to five flowers per stem. Plus, they are lively and hardy. They have more upright and bigger foliage as compared to Hybrid Tea roses. However, these types of roses are not as popular as Floribunda and Hybrid Tea roses.

Groundcover Roses

Groundcover or Landscape roses are known for their strong fragrance, nice shape, and a variety of colors. They are wider, easy to tend, and grow between one foot and three feet. Thus, most of the Groundcover roses are low-maintenance, have a small height, bloom repetitively, and are free of pests and diseases.

Hybrid Tea Roses

Hybrid Tea roses fall into the category of Modern roses. They come in various colors with pointed, well-formed, and big flowers that have a maximum of five-inch diameter. Their stems are upright and lengthy. Hybrid Tea roses require more care and fall at the bottom of Modern roses when it comes to their hardiness.

Miniature Roses

These roses are smaller forms of Hybrid Tea roses. They are characterized by small flowers, leaves, and stems. Miniature roses are strong and versatile. You can find them in a wide array of colors, such as yellow, white, orange, and pink. They have a height from 6 to 18 inches and always bloom for two to three weeks. You can place them in your house in containers, small garden spaces, or narrow hedges.

Old Garden Roses

Old Garden roses, historic roses, or heritage roses are conventional roses that were bred before Hybrid Tea roses came in 1867. They have lots of petals with a strong aroma, can tolerate cold, and are disease resistant. These roses flower once a year during summers.

Polyantha Roses

Polyantha roses have lots of small flowers between spring and fall and are generally found in big bunches. They come in red, pink, and white colors. These roses are quite popular since they are strong, free of diseases, and easy to take care of. You can place them in vases or small garden spaces.

Rambling Roses

Rambling roses, also known as ramblers, have lots of bunches of small and medium flowers with flexible and long canes. These lively roses generally bloom only once, but sometimes they are permanent or repeat bloomers as well.

Ramblers need support to grow, which if they will not get, then they will grow on the ground, covering everything within their path like trees, plants, vehicles, houses, etc. However, if they are trained properly, you can use them to adorn pergolas and arches.

Shrub Roses

These types of roses comprise various roses, majorly including blends of Modern and Old Garden roses. Thus, Shrub roses have the features of both these rose types. They have flowers in the shape of cabbage with varying fragrances. These roses are repetitive bloomers that spread easily with exquisite growth. Plus, they are low-maintenance and can withstand low temperatures.

So, these were some of the main types of roses. Even though you might feel that all roses have a similar appearance, when you study them closely, you will notice the disparity in their structure and shape. This is why we jot down a few popular categories and classes of Garden roses so that you can easily compare them.
