CHRYSANTHEMUM CARE – THE WORKHORSE THAT EARNED ITS NAME
Three tips for keeping chrysanthemums alive for two whole weeks.
Chrysanthemums are the longest-lasting cut flower available in any florist's catalog. Most types can survive up to 10-14 days with minimal care, but proper handling increases that period up to 21 days. Let's see how.
1: Remove all lower leaves under the water level
Chrysanthemum plants have a thick layer of leaves at their bottom part that starts rotting within 48 hours. As a result, the water becomes dirty and creates bacteria. As soon as that happens, the stems' xylem gets blocked, and the flowers begin drooping. All the leaves should be stripped off 15 centimeters below the water line, while the upper leaves remain because they fill the composition visually.
2: Crush, not cut, woody stems
The Ping Pong varieties have woody stems that are difficult to cut. Cutting the stems with a clean scissor causes the formation of a cross-section that prevents water intake. A solution is to crush each stem end on 1 cm by using the back side of a knife or scissors. It provides much more surface area and helps to hydrate the stem effectively. This is the trick used by skilled florists and rarely described in care manuals.
3: Moderately cool water, flower food, and changing water once every 3 days
While tulips require cold water and hydrangeas boiling water with re-cutting, chrysanthemums need moderately cool water with flower food added. Each liter needs one chrysal sachet. Changing the water completely once every 3 days and re-cutting the stems by 1 cm allows you to keep the same bundle longer than any other flower you have ever kept.
WHOLESALE CHRYSANTHEMUMS SINGAPORE — FAQ
Q1. What's the wholesale price for chrysanthemums in Singapore?
Our standard wholesale prices: Cameron Highlands Net White from $12.80 per bundle of 12, and our premium Ping Pong (Cameron Highlands, 12 stems, 70–80cm) at $19.99 per bundle. There is no separate "trade price" — the price you see is the price everyone pays.
Q2. Do I need a trade account to buy wholesale chrysanthemums?
No. Every customer pays the same wholesale price — florists, hotels, event teams, walk-in retail buyers, DIY brides. No application, no membership, no trade-card gate. Walk in to our cold room at 50 Gambas Crescent, or order online.
Q3. What's the minimum order for chrysanthemums?
One bundle. There is no minimum order quantity at DWF. Whether you need 1 bundle for a dining table or 200 bundles for a funeral parlour standing order, you pay the same wholesale rate per bundle.
Q4. Which chrysanthemum variety is best for what?
Different jobs call for different mums. Ping Pong (Cameron Highlands) — uniform ball shape, ideal for hand bouquets and CNY arrangements. Spider (Cameron Highlands) — open quill petals, used for wedding installations and modern arrangements. Net — large single bloom, the standard for funeral wreaths and condolence sprays. Pom Pom and Santini — multi-headed, used as filler and in DIY bouquets. Bonita White — soft year-round bloom for neutral palettes.
Q5. Why are Cameron Highlands chrysanthemums more expensive?
Altitude. Chrysanthemums grown at 1,500m in cool mountain valleys develop tighter buds, longer stems, and a longer vase life than lowland-grown mums. Cameron Highlands has been Malaysia's chrysanthemum capital for fifty years for that biological reason. Our standard Ping Pong from Cameron Highlands holds for 7–10 days vs. 5–7 for lowland alternatives.
Q6. How long do chrysanthemums last in a vase?
Cameron Highlands Pom, Ping Pong and Spider: 7–10 days. With the woody-stem crushing technique (see care guide above), you can extend the upper end of these ranges by 3–4 days.
Q7. Can I order specific chrysanthemum varieties for a funeral or condolence order?
Yes — and we keep a 24/7 WhatsApp line specifically for last-minute funeral and condolence orders at +65 8845 8888. Chrysanthemums (white, yellow, large bloom) are our most-stocked sympathy variety.
